Eldorado is a beautiful little township on the banks of Reedy Creek located 20 km east of Wangaratta in north-eastern Victoria. It sits in a basin surrounded by hills and Aussie bush which contributes to the tranquility of the area. Eldorado boasts a history of thousands of miners and a highly successful mining industry.

Captain William Baker, a Royal Navy man, arrived in Australia in 1837. In 1840 Baker moved south to the Ovens District and settled on Barambogie, a pastoral run. He renamed his run ElDorado. The name ElDorado relates to a fictitious country abounding in gold, believed by the Spaniards and Sir Walter Raleigh to exist upon the upper reaches of the Amazon.

As gold was not discovered until 1852, people believe that Baker was either a fortune teller, or saw his farm as a 'pot of gold'.

The discovery of gold at Eldorado brought prospectors but the depth of the seams necessitated syndicates and companies being formed. Tin and gold was mined through till 1954.
